Art of Light in Prague
The Czech EU chairmanship seems to be a great occasion to present a very rare and unique project in Prague, prepared by the company w art project and entitled “Transparency”. During the period of six months, light objects created by leading artists from abroad will be situated in the Prague’s Old Town. Julian Opie, for example, whose exhibition was previously organized by the same company on the grounds of the Prague’s prestigious Kampa Museum, participates by a light LED screen displaying a moving girl’s figure in one of the windows of the National Theater. The renowned American artist, Jenny Holzer, projects a sign composed of poems by Franz Kafka and Wislawa Szymborská on the façade of the National Museum. The steel sculpture lit from inside and composed of cut alphabets of various languages, executed by Jaume Plensa from Spain, is to be found on the Jan Palach Square. Arthur Duff projects computer-mixed words from his parents’ love letters at the Old Town Square during January. The Austrian Ulla Rauter employs the sounds of the city which lit the sign “Tacet” on the Novotný Footbridge. Light mice by Stephan Reusse then run back and forth on the facades in the Dušní Street. All installations are or will be, understandably, seen after dark. “Transparency” Art of Light in Prague during the Czech Republic EU Chairmanship 7 January – 30 June 2009 7 January – 30 June 2009 Jaume Plensa (Spain), Jan Palach Square Julian Opie (England), National Theater Stephan Reusse (Germany), Dušní Street in front of the Spanish Synagogue 7 January – 1 February Arthur Duff (USA/Italy), Old Town Square 21 February – 30 June Ulla Rauter (Austria), ice-aprons in front of the Novotný Footbridge 30 April – 6 May Jenny Holzer (USA), the National Museum
