Mysterious Distances, Symbolism in Bohemian Lands, from April 22nd – September 27th, 2015 is an exhibition devoted to fine art works produced in the Czech lands from 1880 – 1914 that were influenced by the Symbolism movement.
The title of the exhibition, derived from a volume of poems from the 1890s by Otakar Březina is intriguing indeed. This rich time period in the field of painting and drawing also saw the establishment of the National Theater – the first theater in Prague to feature Czech, not German, as the main language. This exhibition showcases rich works from Alfons Mucha, Max Švabinský, František Bílek, Josef Váchal, Bohumil Kubišta, Jan Zrzavý, Maxmilián Pirner, Beneš Knüpfer, August Brömse, Jaroslav Panuška, Josef Mandl, Tavík František Šimon, Alois Boháč, etc. The objects are on loan from Prague's National Gallery, the City Gallery of Prague, and the Museum of National Literature; art works can also be seen from minor museums, regional institutions and private collections. It is also exciting to note that several pieces are on loan from galleries in Regensburg, Oslo, and Paris. For further information, please visit www.ngprague.cz.
