As soon as photographer Petra Steinerová (1980) graduated from the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, she took the path of recording personal lives without sophisticated subjects. She photographed her subjects as they naturally came to her – “single” parents strolling with their children, abandoned suburban places, landscapes, fleeting moments from her close environment, intimate nooks… But her work is something more than commonplace professional photographic cosmetics. Petra’s “eye” betrays personal approach, fears, tolerance as well as reserved distance. In the latter, however, it is not the lens of an unconcerned industrial camera situated at unusual places, but photo-moments of a more informed, albeit still surprised android. The strength of Steinerová’s viewing became especially apparent in the cycle entitled “Dad” whose subject – change of sex in a family – immediately attracted attention of wider public, although the artist in no way attempted at sensation or media outcry. The cycle well proofs Steinerová’s talents which are also reflected in her immensely thoughtful, elaborated and sensitive selection of pictures from large, long-term cycles.
