Petr Kvíčala’s oeuvre can be best described as consistent and constantly innovated work with ornament whose hand-shaped geometry is based on the initially post-modern concepts. For Kvíčala, ornament thus represents “a point of departure resulting in autonomous visual composition”. He, however, processes ornament in a conceptual way, creating extensive series according to pre-defined principles and developing on simple geometric lines that are either monochrome or hold onto several basic colors. Kvíčala’s ornament has its given rules, but it is not computer-calculated. Its only limitation is the dimensions of the canvas. A clear aesthetic plan subsequently extracts the ornament from its infinite pattern, and the result can be thus simply accepted as easel painting – non-symbolical, just a beautiful one. It is quite evident why art historians agree in almost all points when theorizing about Kvíčala’s work: his concept is straightforward but at the same time ceaselessly self-revitalizing. Kvíčala’s approach (let’s note that his ornament originally departed from natural motifs observed in reality) can be aptly described by only a couple of words – for example, reduction, randomness and immortality; subjective and lyrical articulation of geometry; expression of the process and time; repetition as one of the elementary principles of modern art. Kvíčala’s painting has also been successfully applied in architecture many times. And it is in architecture where his ornament as if took on more meanings, being strongly erotic in red, and intellectually irritating in white and silver…
