Tomáš Císařovský ranks amongst the most noticeable colorist painters of the middle generation – artists who, in the late 1980s, introduced post-modernist tendencies to the Czech artistic scene. His work has been widely respected and closely followed by curators since the 1990; and he is often invited to participate at international art shows and to organize his solo exhibitions abroad. Very successful was his cycle of portraits of Czech nobility, entitled Without Horses. Even though the portraits were in no way merciful to the sitters, they all nevertheless ended up in the respective private collections. In a similar way, Císařovský worked with the phenomenon of visitors of art openings. And although he first focused solely on the figural, his journey to Peru inspired him to also create almost romanticist landscapes. Císařovský’s recent work focuses on reflecting the period of the 1950s in Czechoslovakia, i.e. the era of severe Communist oppression which the artist experienced only as a child. This includes scenes from everyday life as well as digging up for details from life of those who were in power at that time. Yet another field of the artist’s interest is drawing and prints.
