Tomáš Smetana graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and profiled himself as a painter on the artistic scene as early as during the 1990s. He has recently been mainly involved in color drawings and focused on portraits and still-lifes. Smetana is fascinated by the refraction of light on various materials, and by mirror reflections. His drawings can almost be called an optical labyrinth which the artist composed in reality beforehand. Apart from the optical play, in which we come to realize that Smetana is a brilliant draughtsman, the still-life also contains a metaphor of artistic work as the reflection of reality.
