Grotesque is one of the few picturesque-tuned sculptures by Jaroslav Ježek. It was executed at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s and ranks amongst figures which can only rarely be seen on the market. It represents an elephant standing on a cube and a clown who pulls at the animal’s tail. The power of the figure lies in the strain of the clown as he rests on the cube as well as the elephant by both legs in the effort to hold the animal. The unrealistic proportions of the two figures are subordinated to this very tension which runs through the entire sculpture. As is customary for Ježek, details are reduced solely to those necessary for the figures’ identification.
