The London gallery Tate Britain holds an exhibition of contemporary British and international artists. The exhibition artists work with various types of media and materials – from painting and video to multimedia and large-dimensional installations. Majority of the exhibited works will be on display for the first time. The exhibition’s curator, Nicolas Bourriaud gave it his own artistic term, “Altermodern”. According to him, Post-Modern already represents a closed period and the present exhibition – along with four accompanying discussion seminars – aims at defining a new, “alternative” form of contemporary art for the 21st century which stems from the lifestyle of an artist in the today’s highly globalized era instead of from those traditions as Modernism did. The Altermodern manifest claims that contemporary art is not bound by its geographic or cultural roots any more but originates in a global 21st-century landscape. An artist freely travels through this landscape and its global history, creating new links and translations. Life is thus lived on a multiple larger background than ever before. Works by many of the exhibiting artists have been available to viewers in galleries all around the world. They are, for example, Darren Almond (UK), Peter Coffin (US), Shezad Dawood (UK), Loris Greaud (FR), Subodh Gupta (India), Pascale Marthine Tayou (FR) and many others.
