Rafani in the Špála Gallery The art group Rafani (Snapping Mutts) presents itself by an exhibition concerning the decision of its members to express itself by the language of art without employing text. The exhibition aims at the impossible – discovering the very essence of art or, to arrive at the white square via contemporary means. The installation, executed directly for the space of the Špála Gallery, is a parable of what art is supposed to be. It is composed of three parts in which the artists solve social, political as well as intimate aspects of human life and the everyday fight for survival. The artists’ credo is a society with a higher quality of humanity. The ground floor of the gallery displays video records of the group’s new performances focusing on improper situations as, for example, endless slapping amongst the laughing artists. The basement presents a mysterious labyrinth with a soft floor. Viewers walk as far as to the locked door and must find their own code in order to discover the mystery hidden behind it. The first floor is a zone of symmetry and finding balance. Rafani (Snapping Mutts) Václav Špála Gallery, Prague 18 September – 2 November 2008
