The Moravian Gallery in Brno presents next part of the exhibition cycle “Collectors and Patrons”, this time focusing on the Austrian painter Hans Makart. Makart was born in Salzburg in 1840 and produced mainly historical paintings and portraits directly commissioned by the emperor. The color palette and decorative character of his works subsequently influenced many of his successors, including Gustav Klimt. The exhibition, however, surprisingly does not present Makar’s paintings but twelve objects of arts and crafts which the artist himself collected – for his avocation was to stroll through secondhand bookstores where he purchased various objects only on the basis of his taste instead of authenticity. And it is exactly this passion why he perfectly fits into the program of the cycle “Collectors and Patrons”. “Collectors and Patrons IV – Artists.
