Matěj Smetana - Weary Delight | Prague, Czech republic | Dům u Zlatého prstenu, Galerie hlavního města Prahy | 16/06 - 17/07/11
Matěj Smetana (b. 1980) presents a series of four short plasticine animation films using the classic cinematic idiom. His choice of plasticine was determined by the material´s indeterminate organic texture, its potential on the plane of stylization, and its rudimentary palette. The individual short stories making up the series Weary Delight are fictional, yet involve an underlying metaphoric message. Essentially, they depict the main hero´s solipsistic intimate games, mostly leading to unhappy endings. In this melancholy-hued project, Matěj Smetana reaches beyond the borders of his previous output which is known above all to spectators in Brno.
Smetana studied at the Intermedia Art, Drawing and Painting Studios of the Fine Arts Faculty in Brno, and currently carries on with Jiří Příhoda in a graduate doctoral degree course at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague.
