An extensive display of pictures and sculpture of Jan Merta, one of the foremost contemporary Czech artists, has been set up for the period from late September 2009 to the end of January 2010 in the main exhibition hall of Wannieck Gallery. The exhibition is a cross-section of the artist's latest work.
Jan Merta (born 1952) was trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague from 1981 to 1987. He was one of the leading personalities of Czech painting in the generation of the 1980’s. Having reached artistic maturity, he was gradually engaged in resolving issues of art associated with his strive for an ultimate “grasp of the reality” and its representation. In this context, his painting Letter box in a red field dating from 1987 should be mentioned, which is probably one of the highlights of art production of the 1980’s. After 1990, Jan Merta gradually abandoned the theme of “solitary objects” and moved on to a broader capturing and representation of the “real world”.
